what we're making

This preschool spring break thing has me in a quiet tizzy, silently enumerating all the things I have yet to do in preparation for a weekend that features not one but two family birthdays (Gabriel and Gramma), Easter, and all three grandparents visiting. A plethora of riches! Yet this hostess is distracted by a persistent awareness of unlaundered sheets, unfinished gifts, and unshopped-for special meals. Not to mention the work I have not been doing!

However. It has been gorgeous out, and I have been doing quite a lot. It just all tends towards fun-and-pretty rather than practical-and-orderly. Here's our latest making and doing list:

1. Gardening! As the newly minted Gardener-in-Chief (a job long held by my more knowledgeable and experienced husband) I have been busy making this makeshift chicken wire fence, planting seeds, preparing beds, building teepees. In this precious, relatively bug-free season, it is all pleasure.

2. Painting rocks. Gabriel's good friend Wyatt spent the morning with us yesterday and in the 20 minutes that the boys deigned to open their exclusive play just the tiniest crack (hence all the gardening I was able to do), we painted rocks. For the garden. This morning Gabriel and I made felt decorated flags to adorn the tops of the bean teepees. With me at the helm, this is quickly becoming a crafty garden. Weeds? Well, sure. I'll get to those. But did you see our flags??

3. Dyeing eggs. No pictures yet, but today we tried beet and turmeric dye baths that resulted in grayish purple and gorgeous golden eggs (respectively). Tonight I will try green tea, and tomorrow red cabbage leaves. By Easter I hope for a not-at-all garish rainbow of eggs on our table.

4. Spaghetti pancake. This is the best possible thing I can imagine doing with that sad container of plain leftover whole wheat spaghetti in the fridge. (Recipe here.) Cut into wedges, you can gobble it up with oily fingers. I imagine it would be nice with mango chutney and yogurt, or maybe apricot jam...or maybe I just think so because we had rice and dahl for dinner and the condiments are the best part.

Okay, now you. What is the new season inspiring you to do and to make?

The garden looks great! I'm impressed with the fence. Or is that the good corner shown in your picture? I struggled mightily with a homemade fence around my Mom's old garden bed and it looked horrible and wobbly at the end of the day. I hope you have a beautiful Easter weekend. It's shaping up to be absolutely perfect here. Love, H
